The reaction of thiobenzophenone (<B>1</B>) with tributylphosphine (<B>3</B>) gives an oligomer at room temperature, but it gives tributylphosphine sulfide (<B>4</B>), 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane, and tetraphenylethylene (<B>6</B>) at 100 °C.<BR>The reaction of thiofluorenone with <B>3</B> gives <B>4</B>, bifluorenylidine (<B>8</B>), and bifluorenyl (<B>9</B>) at room temperature. These possible mechanisms are discussed by carbene intermediates.
