1. The experiments were undertaken to examine the period of maximal preservation with hypothermia alone with the purpose to utilize the cadaveric kidney.2. The left kidneys of the dog were excised and preserved in the refrigerator adjusted at 4°C. After the 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hour storage, the kidneys were reimplanted into right iliac fossa. One to 6 weeks later, the right kidneys were removed to examine the capability of the reimplanted kidney to maintain health. The survival rates are as the following;(1) 100 per cent in the group of the 6 hour storage(2) 50 per cent in the group of the 24 hour storage(3) 25 per cent in the group of the 48 hour storage(4) None could survive in the group of the 72 and 96 hour storage.3. The kidneys showed nearly normal functions in the follow-up study performed at 3 and 6 months intervals.4. The histological examination of the biopsy specimen serially taken from the reimplanted kidney revealed the process of recovery from the ischemic damage.
