The immunohistochemical multiple staining method is used to recognize multiple antigens on the same section. In our observations of mitotic cells in the normal olfactory epithelium of guinea pigs and basal cells arranged on the basement membrane, we used the immunohistochemical double staining with anti-BrdU and anti-Cytokeratin (CK) antibodies. Numerous mitotic cells reactive with anti-BrdU antibodies were arranged above the basal cells, but most of these cells, did not react with the anti-CK antibodies. This shows that they differ from basal cells.These cells appear to be blastema cells, interstitial cells, resting cells, and the globose cells described by Graziadei et al.The above findings are inconsistent with the hypothesis that basal cells are the precursor cells of olfactory cells.
