Eight Cases of Rhabdomyosarcoma: Treatment and Results

Eight patients with rhabdomyosarcoma of an extremity or buttock were treated with one of several combinations of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, depending upon the stage of disease at diagnosis. Patients even with Stage I extremity (hand) tumor treated by earlier approaches had a less favorable survival than those treated more recently. Two survivors undergoing treatment, though only of seven and nine months duration respectively, in the latter group seem to attest to the efficacy of current combined modality therapy for non-disseminated tumors. Two of the eight patients with embryonal histology, (with a survival beyond two years) had a tendency to local recurrences prior to distant metastasis. Finally, the use of surgery alone or with insufficient chemotherapy, even for apparently localized and fully resectable tumors, must be discouraged because of the early dissemination of micrometastases among patients with rhabdomyosarcoma of any site. This is well illustrated by one of the patients in our series, whose affected extremity was amputated. Systemic chemotherapy is therefore warranted in all cases of rhabdomyosarcoma.
