Histologically, fibrous dysplasia is made up of spindle cells admixed with newly formed trabeculae of immature bone and/or osteoid of different sizes and distribution patterns. In occasional cases, particularly if tibial in location, the bone tissue is associated with rimming of osteoblasts. Kempson classified such cases as ossifying fibroma, and emphasized the more aggressive behavior of the so-called ossifying fibroma of the tibia, with the possibility of local recurrence after limited excision. However, we found that several cases of fibrous dysplasia, or so-called ossifying fibroma of the tibia in younger children show a similar clinical course, and do not feel that the introduction of new and confusing terms is justified.
