We compared long term effects of gold sodium thiomalate (GST) and auranofin (AF) in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). One hundred seventy two patients received GST and one hundred fifty two patients received AF. Both GST and AF were effective. The improvement rate of Lansbury's index tended to be higher and the drop out rate due to safety or ineffectiveness lower in the GST group compared with the AF group. Regarding long term administration, both drugs started to show diminishing effect, with GST effect decreasing after two years and AF after two and a half years.
