Primary Musculoskeletal Tumors: Examination with MR Imaging Compared with CT.

Sixteen patients with new or recurrent primary tumors of bone or soft tissues underwent both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). The neoplasms arose in osseus tissue in ten and in soft tissue in six individuals: MRI was judged superior to CT in the majority of cases. The major reason was the greater contrast between neoplasm and adjacent normal tissue and the extent of abnormal bone marrow. Judging the relation of tumors to vital structures, such as blood vessels or nerves, MRI is generally superior to CT. CT scan shows the relationship between the tumor and the neighboring structures in greater detail, but the exact borders between tumor, possible surrounding edema or inflammatory tissue and normal muscles could not be defined. On the other hand, MRI shows the exact relationship between them, clearly separated by edematous or reactive tissues.
