Influences from the total resection of vastus medialis muscle toward the knee extesor mechanism.

The patient was a 20-year-old woman suffering from rhabdomyosarcoma of the right thigh. A radical resection of the vastus medialis muscle involving the tumor was done without reconstructive surgery of the knee extensor mechanism.At the present time, dull pain seems to be caused by mal-alignment of the P F J in the right knee and there is a little ADL impairment.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the knee extensor mechanism by Cybex II.The isokinetic knee extension strength of the right knee compared with the contra-side lessened to 54.9per cent 2 year and 5 months after operation, but increased up to 94.9per cent after 3 year and 4 months.The isometric knee extension strength lessened in the position of less than 50° flexion.We discuss the extensor mechanism of the knee joint after the radical resection of the vastus medlalis muscle.
