Clinical Hematological Study of the Acute Neck Pain and Stiffness.

The causes of acute neck pain are unknown. Six patients with severe acute neck pain and stiffness were examined by the blood study. The patients ranged in age from thirty-nine to sixty-five years (average, 52.5 years). The fibrinogen showed marked increase in all patients. Erythro-sedimentation rate was revealed abnormal in 5 cases.C-reactive protein was positive in only one case. Alkali-phosphate stayed within normal limits.The cervical x-ray photography, myelogram and MRI were within normal limits. These results suggest that thrombophlebitis or venous thrombosis may have occurred in patients with acute neck pain.
