Growth-Inhibition Phenomenon by Glucose in Relation to the Virulence of Tubercle Bacilli.

With regard to the virulence of tubercle bacilli, our understanding is that virulent tubercle bacilli can vigorously multiply in sensitive host and persist there in a prolonged period producing tuberculous lesion and sometimes inducing fatal outcome. On the other hand, low-or avirulent strains can be isolated as a stable variant from parent strains of high virulence by various means of colonial dissociation, as represented by BCG or H 37Ra. Research works have beenreported by some investigators dealing with the mechanism of virulence, namely unknown factors in tubercle bacilli which govern the capacity of in viva multiplication, as a problem of the pattern of bacterial metabolism. Some of those research works are concerned with the analysis of the relation between oxygen tension and growth, and consequently with the relation between degree of virulence and vigor of oxidative attack to certain substrates. Ach ievements in this field of research appear to be contri butable to the understanding of many problems concerned with the pathogenesis of tuberculosis, such as infection, immunity, and natural resistance. The data as shown in this paper were obtained in the experiments conducted under the idea as described above.
