Studies on Sjoegren syndrom from the aspect of clinical features, laboratory findings, sialograms, pathological findings of the lip biopsy, and RI-sialograms.

Fifteen patients with definite Sjögren's syndrome met criteria of Sjögren's Disease Research Committee (Japan, 1977) were studied from the aspect of clinical features, hematological and serological examinations, sialograms, pathological findings of the labial minor salivary glands, and RI-sialograms. The following findings were obtained: 1) They were all females from 31 to 76 years old (mean age 56.7). Nine cases had sicca complex alone, and six had the following associated diseases: three with progressive systemic sclerosis, one with systemic lupus erythematosus, one with rheumatoid arthritis, and one with chronic thyroiditis. 3) Clinically, Raynaud's phenomenon and drug allergies (47%), fever (40%) and arthralgia (33%) were observed respectively. 3) Various hematological and serological abnormalities were observed, such as elevation of ESR (93%), hyper γ-globulinemia (67%), positive RA factor (43%), anemia (40%), and positive microsome test (47%). 4) All lip-biopsy specimens showed moderate to severe chronic sialoadenitis, and abnormal sialograms were observed in 93% (14/15). 5) High relationships were observed between sialogram and histopathological findings of the labial minor salivary glands. 6) Scintigraphically we were able to evaluate more clearly the uptake, concentration, and excertion of 99 m TC-pertechnetate in the major salivary glands from the function curve. 7) High relationships between RI-sialogram and sialogram and between RI-sialogram and the histopathological findings of the labial minor salivary glands were observed.
