Since Hirst (I) reported the hemagglutination by influenza virus in 1941, the hemagglutination by other viruses has been widely studied, and it has been known that a large number of mammalian viruses including neurotropic viruses (2)-(14) possess a similar capacity under a certain condition. Specific hemagglutination with dengue virus was first described by Sweet, Chanoch and Sabin (15), and later by Sweet and Sabin (16) more in detail. In 1953 Casals and Brown (17) prepared specific hemagglutinin extracts of dengue viruses by means of a method for the preparation of complement fixation antigen. We could ascertain in the course of our experiments on the hemagglutination with dengue virus that the specific hemagglutination occurred when a calcium chloride solution as a source of reaction medium and horse erythrocytes were employed. This paper presents various conditions and properties of dengue virus hemagglutination by our method.
