Clinical investigations on the levels of serum TNF-.ALPHA. in the patients with acute liver injury.

The levels of serum TNF-α were examined by using monoclonal antibody against human TNF-α in the patients with acute liver injury. Serum TND-α levels in the patients with acute liver injury were significantly higher than those in healthy controls. And the levels of TNF-α in the patients with fulminant hepatitis were higher than those in the patients with acute hepatitis. Furthermore, the peak of serum TNF-α levels was seen in early stage of the clinical course in the patients with acute hepatitis and fulminant hepatitis (acute form). There was no relationship between serum TNF-α levels and histological hemorrhagic necrosis of the liver.<BR>These results suggest a possible role of TNF-α for induction and development of acute liver injury.
