Transcatherter therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma with tumor thrombi in the main branch of the portal vein or inferior vena cava.

Two hundreds and sixty three patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that extend to a main portal vein and inferior vena cava were treated by transcatheter therapy. By the therapeutic effects of TAE, tumor and tumor thrombi were necrotized. But TAE occurred early death in 13 cases (14.9%) and the one year survival rate was only 17.2% in effective cases. The therapeutic effective rate of infusion was only 14.1%, but the frequency of early death was 2.3%. The cases that infusion were effective obtained the recanalization of vein in highly rate, and in these cases the one year survival rate was 60.2%.<BR>These results led to conclude that infusion should be chosen firstly in the HCC with tumor thrombi.
