Clearance of hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C virus antibody in hepatitis B virus carriers.

During observasion period of 6.3±3.9 (mean±SD) years, clearance of the hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigen occurred in 15 (3.4%) of 441 HB virus (HBV) carriers. Blood transfusion in the past and the hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody in the serum was observed significantly higher in these 15 patients than in the other 426 patients without clearance of he HBs antigen occurred. Six of the 15 patients who became negative for the HBs antigen had past history of transfusion and the all were positive for the HCV antibody. Contrasted to remarkable improvement of serum ALT level and histological picture in the HCV antibody-negative patients after the clearnace of HBs antigen, the changes were exaggerated HCV antibody-positive patients. These findings suggested that the HCV may play significant part in for the clearance of the HBs antigen. Progression of hepatitis after clearance of the HBsAg in these cases probably caused by the HCV.
