As part of investigation of the effect of organic salts (acetate and oxalate) on the swollen condition of hide substance soaked in chrome liquor, the authors examined preliminarily the variation of water contents of gelatin jelly. The results obtained are summarized as follows.1. Although the water contents of gelatin jelly decreased with the progress of chrome tanning in SO2-reduced liquor, there was no proportional relationship between the decrease of water contents of the jelly and the increase of the chrome absorbed.2. The water contents of the jelly soaked in chrome liquor containing organic salt were larger than those of blank (soaked in SO2-reduced liquor). The higher the concentration of organic salt, the larger became the water contents of the jelly.3. The water contents of the jelly soaked in chrome liquor containing masked chrome become much larger than those of the jelly soaked in SO2-reduced liquor or in a liquor which cantained the same concentration of organic salt but had not been aged.4. The water contents of the jelly showed at first a little rise and then a gradual decline with the progress of tanning in SO2-reduced liquor.In the variation mentioned above, the addition of organic salt to chrome liquor made the water contents increase more in the early stage of tanning and decrease slowly in the following stage.5. The muximum water contents of each layer of the jelly, when examined stratographic-ally, appeared with the difference of time and from the outer layer to the inner, The water contents of each layer varied great during the period of tanning in SO2-reduced liquor. By addition of organic salt, however, the stratographical water contents of the jelly, as compared with those of the blank (described above), varied slowly and continuously from the outer layer to the inner.
