Comparing the amount of chrome removed with water from several kinds of tanned hide powder, we studied the effects of organic salts upon the combining power of chrome to hide powder. Four kinds of chrome liquor were prepared: glucose-eeduced liquor, SO2-reduced liquor, SO2-reduced liquor to which formate was added, and that to which oxalate was added. To 2g of hide powder pretreated with a mixed solution of HClO4 and NaClO4 were added 40 l of each liquor containing 0.5% Cr. These mixtures were then continuously rotated for 4 hours. After the tanned hide powder was washed with running water for 20 hours and dried, the amount of fixed chrome was determined in these specimens. The amount of absorbed chrome was determined from the difference of Cr concentration between fresh and exhausted chrome liquor. So, the amount of removed chrome was estimated by deducting the fixed chrome from the absorbed chrome. Moreover, the charge of the removed chrome was examined quantitatively by the ion-exchange method and using the methylated hide powder.The results obtained are summarized as follows.1. Addition of organic salt to SO2-reduced liquor caused an increase in the amount of the chrome removed from the tanned hide powder, compared with the salt-free control.2. In specimens which had been tanned with the masked chrome liquor containing organic acido radical, the amount of chrome removed by washing was approximately equal to the amount of anionic chrome absorbed by hide powder.3. From the results of an experiment using methylated hide powder, it was clear that a portion of the absorbed cationic and anionic chrome was removed simultaneously with water.When organic salt was added to chrome solution, the amount of chrome removed from both types of chrome became larger.
