Determination of Stereostructure of Neocurdione Isolated from Curcuma wenyujin

The constituents of the essential oil of Curcuma wenyujin were thoroughly investigated by GC-MS using a glass capillary column and by GC using a silicon-coated short column. A new stereoisomer of curdione (2) named neocurdione was identified together with 2, curcumalactone and so far undetected germacrene D, elemol and eudesmol. The stereostructure of neocurdione isolated from the fresh rhizoma of the plant was determined by X-ray diffraction as 1a (or 1b) having a unique syn conformation.
