Success rate of mandibular condylar movement exercises for patients with internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint at the time of initial instruction and two weeks later

We previously reported that mandibular condyle movement exercise (MCME) is an effective initial treatment for patients with closed lock. Furthermore, we reported that the age of the patient and duration of the lock are important factors in predicting the effect MCME. The aim of this follow-up study was to investigate the progress of MCME treatment for the first two weeks after the initial visit. We also investigated the significance of the visual analogue scale (VAS) over the two weeks for the two outcomes of success and failure. Seventy-four women between 19 and 75 years of age with a mean of 41 years were included in this follow-up study. At the initial visit, 50 cases were successful (68%) and there were 24 failures (32%). Two weeks later, there were 54 successful cases (73%) and 20 failures (27%). The number of successful cases increased by 4 (5%) in the two weeks from the initial visit. After two weeks, VAS measurements indicated 31 successful cases and 43 failures. These results suggest that continuation of MCME may be effective in improving closed lock. Because pain free patients may be able to carry out MCME better than those with pain, their prognosis may be better.
