Effects of Geranium thunbergii, Geranium nepalense, tannic acid and geraniin on the intsetinal motility and acetyicholine (ACh) release were studied by using the isolated rat intestine. Geranium thunbergii, Geranium nepalense, tannic acid and geraniin inhibited the ACh- and histamine- induced contractions of the small and large intestine, but not the Ca^<2+>-induced contraction in the absence of external Ca^<2+> and not the Ba^<2+>-induced contraction either in the absence or presnece of extrenal Ca^<2+>. The potency of Geranium nepalense was between those of Geranium thunbergii (white) and Geranium thunbergii (red), both on the small and large intestines. Geraniin inhibited the Ca^<2+>-dependent high K^+-evoked release of ^3H-ACh from the ileum preloaded with ^3H-choline. Thus, Geranium thunbergii, Geranium nepalense, tannic acid and geraniin may reduce the intestinalcontractility by interfering with the cholinergic neuron and receptor located on the intestinal smooth muscle.
