"Hou po (厚朴)" is an important crude drug in China and Japan, but the original plants and medicinally used parts in the two countries are different. In China,, the trunk, branch and root bark of Magnolia officinalis REHD. et WILS. and M. officinalis var. biloba REHD. et WILS. are used. In Japan, only the trunk bark of M. obovata Thunb. is used. In this paper, the morphological and histological studies of the differrent parts of the three texa were undertaken. The results show that it is possible to classify these species by their external and internal characteristics. A key to the species of these plants based on the morphological and histological characteristics of trunk, branch and root barks is provided.
