Comparative studies on the chemical constituents of the tubers of Gloriosa rothschildiana and the corms of Colchicum autumnale revealed that both of the plants contained a new phenolic glucoside, 2-β-D-glucopyranosyloxybenzyl 2-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-6-methoxybenzoate, the first salicin derivative from Liliaceae plants, as well as caffeic acid 4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, colchicoside and colchicine. Colchiciline was detected only in G. rothschildiana, and N-deacetylcolchicine, demecolcine and N-methyldemecolcine in C. autumnale.
