Measurement of Breaking Phenomena of Ag and Au Crossbar Electric Contacts Depending on Contacting Spots

The electric response of breaking contacts usually shows very different responses each time. We simplified the physical conditions as much as possible for our measurements, using contact electrodes of pure Au and/or Ag cross bars. We suppressed arc ignition by transient current switch circuits. For every contact, there is only one breaking operation. We then measured the contact currents and voltages accurately between the melting and boiling voltages. After only one operation, we observed the contact surfaces of the electrodes with a microscope. A clear difference between the initial breaking operation and the following additional operations was confirmed. Our opinion is that the melting contact phenomena differs between only one spot contact and multi-spot contacts.
