Physical phenomena of breaking electric contacts are complicated by energizing, softening, melting, and arc. Due to tangency on the surface with ruggedness, the contact is considered to consist of many complicated contacting points. The electric functions of contacting points are classified into electric conductive cluster and electric field effect cluster. The electric conductive cluster transfers to a melting cluster at Vc≒Um (Vc; contact voltage, Um; melting voltage). The melting cluster melts or fabricates a metal bridge, depending on electric circuit conditions. The melting cluster model was confirmed by an examination with conventional electromagnetic relays and current fuses. The electric field effect cluster causes an electric discharge depending on the contact voltage. After the contact current is shut down, the field effect cluster is active and can ignite an arc discharge at a sufficiently high voltage.
