Thermal release of organic compounds from kerogen by a DTA/TG-GC/MS method

An analytical method was introduced using a thermal analyzer combined with MS or GC/MS, in order to examine thermal behavior of kerogen samples with an emphasis on the compound release patterns under a heating experiment with simultaneous detection. The kerogen samples released about 20% of the bulk carbon. The compound released are mainly hydrocarbons among which unsaturated ones including aromatics were predominant. The compound releases took largely in a narrow temperature range of 400-500℃. Further use of this method would supply useful information not only on kerogen itself but also on the diagenesis of kerogen and its related hydrocarbon formation in sediments. This method is not limited only to kerogen but to materials of organic geochemical intersts.
