Potential of SAR for the cryosphere studies

Currently space borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are widely used to map cryosphere (glacier and snow covered area in alpine and Himalayan regions) and also to develop algorithms to infer geophysical parameters. SAR data is extremely useful for the qualitative and quantitative estimation of snow parameters which are essential for hydrological applications. Multi-temporal SAR data have great potential in mapping glacier facies which has distinct advantage in the glacier mass balance estimation.
