The variation in the swelling, the Q R Z and the water content of the skin was observed by the same method as described in Parts I-V. This time, however, two endocrine glands were exstirpated at one time (the supra-renal glands were of course made insufficient of their function). The test animals were 42 male and 56 female healthy adult rabbits of nearly the same weight (approximately 2Kg.) and the test solution was a 0.2 N solution of natrium chloride. The results were as follows. 1) When the thyroid glands and the testicles were exstirpated at one time, the rate of the swelling of the skin increased with time, while the Q R Z and the water content decreased with time. The following table gives an idea of the correlation between these glands. It was noticeable that the rate of swelling, the Q R Z and the water content observed before, three weeks after and six weeks after the exstirpation, increased or decreased regularly with time in the case of exstirpation of two different glands at one time. In the case of exstirpation of each gland singly, however, they often increased or decreased irregularly with time; that is, they sometimes increased in the course of the first three weeks and decreased in the course of the next three weeks and vice versa. The auther was forced to the concultion that these facts are most probably due to the accumlated and accentuated effect of two different glands working together, when the effect of either of the two glands was little, and that little effect was not apparent owing to compensation of the cooperating glands. And so he was obliged to adopt the results obtained at the end of the sixth week and not those at the end of the third week in comparing the results. In the case of exstirpation of both the thyroid glands and the testicles, the rate of swelling and the Q R Z at the end of the sixth week were larger and water content was smaller than in the case of the exstirpation of one of them. From these results it may be said that the thyroid glands and the testicles acted cooperatively on the swelling and the Q R Z of the skin. It was hard to know, however, whether the exstirpation of both glandss acted cooperatively or antagonistically on the water content of the skin. 2) When the thyroid glands and the ovaries were exstirpated at one time, the rate of the swelling of the skin increased with time, while both the Q R Z and the water content decreased with time. In the case of exstirpation of both the thyroid glands and the ovaries, the rate of swelling at the end of the sixth week was larger, and both the Q R Z and the water content were smaller, than in the case of exstirpation of one of them. From the standpoint of the swelling, therefore, it was hard to decide whether the thyroid glands and the ovaries acted cooperatively or antagonistically. But it could be inferred that the two glands acted cooperatively on the Q R Z and the water content of the skin. 3) When the thyroid glands were exstirpated and the functioning of the supra-renal glands at the same time obstructed, the rate of swelling increased little with time, and the Q R Z decreased with time, but the water content did not vary much. When the rates of swelling at the end of the sixth week were compared with each other, it was found that the rate of swelling in the case of exstirpation of the thyroid glands was largest, that in the case of exstirpation of the thyroid glands and insufficiency of the supra-renal glands was less and that in the case of insufficiency of the supra-renal glands was the least. Both the Q R Z and the water content were largest in the case of insufficiency of the supra-renal glands, less in the case of exstirpation of thyroid glands and insufficiency of the supra-renal glands, and least in the case of exstirpation of the thyroid glands. The thyroid glands, therefore, seemed to act antagonistically to the supra-renal glands as to the swelling, the Q R Z and water content of the skin. 4) When the testicles were exstirpated and the functioning of the supra-renal glands at the same time depressed, the rate of swelling increased with time, the water content also increased with time, but only a little, while the Q R Z decreased for three weeks and thereafter did not vary much. With regard to the rate of swelling at the end of the sixth week, it was recognized that the rate of swelling with the testicles exstirpated was the same as that when the testicles were exstirpated and the functioning of the supra-renal glands at the same time interrupted, and that in both these cases it was larger than that in the case of insufficiency of the supra-renal glands alone. The QRZ with the testicles exstirpated and the functioning of the supra-renal glands at the same time suppressed was smaller than when only one of these glands was lacking, while the water content was larger when the testicles and the functioning of the supra-renal glands were both lacking than when only one of them was absent. It was not possible, therefore, to decide whether the testicles and the supra-renal glands acted cooperatively or antagonistically on the rate of swelling of the skin, but it was easy to conclude that they acted cooperatively on the Q R Z and the water content of the skin. 5) When the ovaries and the supra-renal glands were put out of commission at the same time, the rate of swelling and the Q R Z decreased with time, while the water content did not vary much. As to the rate of swelling and the Q R Z at the end of the sixth week, it was found that both of them were smaller when both ovaries and the supra-renal glands were wanting than when only one of them was lacking, while the water content was the same when both the ovaries and the supra-renal glands were not functioning as when only the function of the supra-renal glands was absent. In each both these cases the water content was larger than when the ovaries were missing. It was learned that both the ovaries and the supra-renal glands acted cooperatively on the rate of swelling and the Q R Z of the skin, but it was difficult to decide whether they acted cooperatively or antagonistically on the water content of the skin.
