The backs of healthy adult male rabbits of nearly the same weight (approximately 2000gms) were epilated. Excised pieces of the skin from the backs, separated as much as possible from the subcutaneous fatty tissue, were soaked in 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5N solutions of muriatic alkali metals (NaCl, KCl, LiCl) and muriatic alkali earth metals (CaCl_2, BaCl_2, MgCl_2,), Sorensens buffer solutions (pH1, pH2, pH3, pH4, pH5, pH6, pH7, pH8, pH9, pH10), 0.2Mol solution of grape sugar and distilled water at 0℃. The change in the weight was measured by means of a chemical balance at every twenty four hours and it was observed for ten days. Such an examination was carried out three timesbefore the extirpation of the thyroid glands and three and six weeks after the extirpation respectively. From a comparison of the rates and the curves of swelling obtained from the examinations, the following conclusions were deduced:- 1) The rate of the swelling of the skin varied in the order as shown below. (A) In 0.1 and 0.2N solutions of muriatic alkali metals and muriatic alkali earth metals 6 weeks after the extirpation of the thyroid gland>3 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation. (B) In 0.5N solution of NaCl 6 weeks after the extirpation>3 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation. (C) In 0.5N solution of KCl 3 weeks after the extirpation>6 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation. (D) In 0.5 solutions of LiCl, BaCl_2, CaCl_2, MgCl_2 6 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation>3 weeks after the extirpation. (E) In 0.2Mol solution of grape sugar and distilled water 6 weeks after the extirpation>3 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation. (F) In buffer solutions of pH1, pH2, pH3, pH4, pH5, pH6, pH7, pH8, pH9, pH10 6 weeks after the extirpation>3 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation. (G) In buffer solution of pH6, pH8 3 weeks after the extirpation>6 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation. (H) In buffer solution of pH7 3 weeks after the extirpation>before the extirpation>6 weeks after the extirpation. A study of these results showed that the rate of swelling generally increased with the time, though the reaction and the concentration of the solutions interfered in some caces. 2) The effect on the swelling of the activity of the hydrogen Ions of the solutions did not always agree with the series of the activity itself. 3) In the solutions of the same kind with various concentrations the rate of swelling of the skin was scarcly influenced by extirpation of the thyroid gland. 4) In the solutions of the same concentration though of different kinds, the rate of swelling of skin was not much influnced by the extirpation of the thyroid glands. 5) The curves of swelling of the skin examined agreed mostly with the No. II and No. III types given by Nishimura in the Japanese Journal of Dermatology and Urology Vols. 32 and 33. Those of the swelling in the solutions of muriatic alkali metals, muriatic alkali earth metals and buffer solutions belonged to either of them. That of the swelling in the distilled water agreed with his No. I type and that in grape sugar solutions nearly with No. IV type. After the extirpation of the thyroid gland the curves of swelling of types No. I and No. IV remained unchanged, while those of types No. II and No. III changed varibly within themselves. Judging from the approximation of types No. II and No. III, however, such changes have no important significance.
