The author observed the variation in the swelling, the QRZ and the water content of the skin by the same method as described in Part VI, when the substance of several endocrine glands was given to the test animals. The test animals were 90 male and 38 female healthy adult rabbits, all about the same weight (approximately 2Kg.). The results were as follows:- 1) When a fixed quantity of the substance of the thyroid gland (2.0cc Thyradin, Takeda & Co.) was injected into the abdominal integments of the test animals subcutaneously, every day for six weeks, the rate of swelling and the QRZ at the end of the sixth week were smaller and the water content was larger than before the injection. 2) When a fixed quantity of the substance of the sexual glands (2.0cc Spermatin, Takeda & Co., 1.0cc Geneglandol, Sankyo & Co.) was injected into the abdominal integments of the test animals subcutaneously, every day for six weeks, the author could not find much difference between the rate of swelling and the QRZ of the skin at the end of the sixth week and those observed before the injection. But the water content was larger than before the injection. 3) When a fixed quantity of the substance of the supra-renal gland (0.13g Suprarenal glands Desiccated U.S.P., Park, Davis) was given to the test animals internally, every day for six weeks, the rate of the swelling and the QRZ of the skin at the end of the sixth week were larger and the water content was smaller than those before it was given. 4) When a fixed quantity of the substance of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland (1.0cc Hypohorin, Takeda & Co.) was injected into the abdominal integments of the test animals subcutaneously, every day for six weeks, the rate of the swelling of the skin at the end of the sixth week was smaller and the QRZ was larger than before the injection, but the author could not recognise much difference between the water content at the end of the sixth week and that before the injection. 5) When a fixed quantity of the substance of the pineal gland (one Pineal Gland Tablet, Park, Davis) was given to the test animals internally, every day for six weeks, the rate of swelling and the water content of the skin at the end of the sixth week were larger and the QRZ was smaller than before it was given. 6) Nevertheless the auther had already observed that in case of the exstirpation of the testicles at the end of the sixth week, the rate of the swelling of the skin was larger and the QRZ was smaller than before exstirpation, when the fixed quantity of the substance of the testicles was injected to the test animals, the testicles of which had been exstirpated, every day for six weeks from soon after the exstirpation, at the end of the sixth week the QRZ was larger and the grade of increase of the rate of the swelling was smaller than those of the test animals, which had merely had their testicles exstirpated and received no injection. 7) Nevertheless he had already odserved that in case of the exstirpation of the ovaries at the end of the sixth week, the rate of the swelling and the, QRZ of the skin were smaller than before the exstirpation, when the fixed quantity of the substance of the ovaries was injected into the test animals, the ovaries of which had been exstirpated, every day for six weeks from soon after the exstirpation, at the end of the sixth week the grade of decrease of the rate of the swelling was larger and that of the QRZ was smaller than those of the test animals, which had merely had their ovaries exstirpated and recieved no injection. 8) Nevertheless he had already observed that in case of the exstirpation of the thyroid gland at the end of the sixth week the water content of the skin was smaller than that before the exstirpation, when the fixed quantity of the substance of the anterier lobe of the pituitary gland was injected into the test animals, the thyroid glands of which had been exstirpated, every day for six weeks from soon after the exstirpation, at the end of the sixth week the grade of decrease of the water content was larger than that of the test animals, which had merely had their thyroid glands exstirpated and received no injection. 9) Nevertheless he has already observed that in case of the exstirpation of the testicles at the end of the sixth week the water content of the skin was larger than before the exstirpation, when the fixed quantity of the substance of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland was injected to the test animals, the testicles of which had been exstirpated, every day for six weeks from soon after the exstirpation, at the end of the sixth week the water content was smaller than that, of the test animals, which had merely had their testicles exstirpated and received no injection. 10) Nevertheless he has already observed that in case of the exstirpation of the ovaries at the end of the sixth week the water content was smaller than before the exstirpation, when the fixed quantity of the substance of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland was injected to the test animals, the ovaries of which had been exstirpated, every day for six weeks from soon after the exstirpation, at the end of the sixth week the water content was larger than that of the test animals, which had merely had their ovaries exstirpated and received no injection. 11) Nevertheless he has already observed that in the case of the function of the supra-renal glands being interrupted at the end of the sixth week the water content of the skin was larger than before the interruption; when a fixed quantity of the substance of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland was injected into the test animals which had the function of their supra-renal glands interrupted, every day for six weeks from soon after the interruption, at the end of the sixth week the water content was smaller than that of the test animals, which merely had the function of their supra-renal glands interrupted and received no injection. From the above maintioned results, the author learned that the substances of the thyroid gland and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland reduce the rate of the swelling of the skin and prolong the QRZ [refer to 1), 2)], the substances of the supra-renal gland and the pineal gland enlarge the rate of swelling and shorten the QRZ [refer to 3), 5)]. The influence of the substance of the sexual glands was not known when it was given to healthy animals, but from the result in the case when it was given to castrated animals, he supposed that the substances tend to reduce the rate of the swelling and to prolong the QRZ. From the stand point of the swelling and the Q,RZ, therefore, it is possible to conclude that the thyroid gland, the sexual glands and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland act cooperatively, the supra-renal gland and the pineal gland also act cooperatively, and the thyroid gland z or the sexual glands or the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and the supra-renal gland or the pineal gland act antagonistically. With regard to the water content it is recognised that the substance of the sexual glands equally enlarge it [refer to 1), 2), 3)], the substances of the suprarenal gland and the pineal gland equally reduce it [refer to 4), 6)]. Therefore it is easy to conclude from the standpoint of the water content that the thyroid gland and the sexual glands act cooperatively, the supra-renal gland and the pineal gland also act cooperatively, and the thyroid gland or the sexual glands and the supra-renal gland or the pineal gland act antagonistically, but about the substance of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, when it was given to healthy animals the influence upon the water content was not evident [refer to 5)], but from the influence upon the water content of the skin of the test animals, which had had their several endocrine glands exstirpated was known that the thyroid gland and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland act antagonistically, the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and the pineal gland act antagonistically [refer to 8), 9), 11)], and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and the sexual glands act cooperatively [refer to 9), 10), 11)]. In short it is easy to decide that from the standpoint of the rate of swelling, the QRZ and the water content of the skin the thyroid gland and the sexual glands, sexual glands and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, the supra-renal gland and the pineal gland act cooperatively, whereas the thyroid gland and the supra-renal gland, the thyroid gland and the pineal gland, the sexual glands and the supra-renal gland, the sexual glands and the pineal gland, and the anterior lobe of the pituitery gland act antagonistically, but it is hard to decide whether the thyroid gland and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, and the suprarenal gland and the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland act cooperatively or antagonistically.
