It was made clear in the author's first Report that the injection of Tsutsugamushi virus raises considerably and specially the normal power of agglutinating bacillus typhosus and also the production of bac. typhosus immune agglutinin. It was also mentioned that the author is of opinion that such specific raising of the production of agglutinin by the injection of Tsutsugamushi virus is probably due to the specific affinity between the pathogen of Tsutsugamushi disease and the Reticulo-Endothelial System, which is regarded as the place where All antibodies are produced. The purpose of the present experiment was not only to find out what relation, if any, there is between the injection of Tsutsugamushi virus and the production of bac. paratyphosus A and B agglutinin in rabbits, but also to try and confirm the conclusions given in the first Report. The following are the conclusions. 1) The injection of Tsutsugamushi virus raises the normal power of agglutinating bac. paratyphosus A and B, the latter more than the other. The injection of variola virus as a control also raises the normal power of agglutinating these bacilli, but the injection of Tsutsugamushi virus raises it to a higher degree and specially the power of agglutinating bac. paratyphosus B to a much higher degree. 2) The normal power of agglutination is at its manimum from the 7th to the 12th day after the injection, which is earlier than the manimum of the normal power of agglutinating bac. typhosus. This is completely in accord with the fact that Widal's reaction is often positive in the period of convalescence from Tsutsugamushi disease, and therefore the author is of the opinion that the most careful attention is necessary in the practical application of Widal's test to the differential diagnosis of Tsutsugamuchi disease and Paratyphus. 3) The injection of Tsutsugamushi virus also raises considerably the production of bac. paratyphosus A and B immune agglutinin and the production of the B immune agglutinin is raised more than that of the other. The results of injecting variola virus are similar to the above, but there is a great difference in degree; the greatest difference is in the raising of the production of bac. paratyphosus B agglutinin. The period of the manimum production of these bacilli immune agglutinins comes earlier than that of the manimum production of bac. typhosus agglutinin. 4) So far as these three bacilli are concerned, the production of bac. typhosus normal and immune agglutinin is the most highly and specifically raised; the increase in the production of bac. paratyphosus B agglutinin comes next and that of bac. paratyphosus A agglutinin is the lowest. 5) The influence of inoculation with Tsutsugamushi virus upon the production of bac. typhosus agglutinin appears a little later than that upon the production of bac. paratyphosus A and B agglutinin, and therefore the period of the manimum power of agglutination of bac. typhosus comes later than that of the power of agglutinating bac. paratyphosus A and B. 6) The author confirmed his opinion that such specific raising of the production of bac. paratyphosus A and B agglutinin like that of bac. typhosus agglu-tinin by the injection of Tsutsugamushi virus, is probably due to the specific affinity between the pathogen of Tsutsugamushi disease and the R.E.S., which is regarded as the place where all antibodies are produced.
