This paper is an account of the author's study of anacidity in forty cases of stomach- and duodenal ulcer chronically developed. A statistical investigation of those cases was made during 14 months from the beginning of January 1930 to the end of February 1931. The following are the conclusions: 1) Anacidity was found in 30per cent of the stomach ulcer cases, in 48per cent of the cases of ulcer near the pyloric orifice of the stomach, and in 7.5per cent of the duodenal ulcer cases. These percentages are considerably higher than those reported by Moynihan, Taketani and others. "Ulcer near the pyloric orifice of the stomach" is the author's term for the atypical ulcer which cannot be distinctly discriminated clinically from the other stomach- and duodenal ulcers. 2) The stomach contents in these cases are viewed as just canceroid: being closely related with the total deficiency of free hydrochloric acid, with the presence of lactic acid, and with the positive reaction of the blood. This anacidity is observed to go almost side by side with the appearance of lactic acid and the positive reaction of the blood. 3) In the fractional examination of the stomach contents in five cases in which injections of histamin were employed, the appearance of free hydrochloric acid was observed in two cases. Therefore, in such anacidity there is mixed what Schemensky and Geling call "relative achylia" or "pseudoachylia".
