We prefer democracy to other forms of government because we expect democracy to improve the quality of human experience. In this sense, democracy becomes for us, as Dewey put it, "the greatest experiment of humanity-that of living together in which the life of each of us is at once profitable in the deepest sense of the word, profitable to himself and helpful in the building up of the individuality of others." Therefore, to develop such fundamental relations among ourselves is the very aim and purpose of democracy. Under this interpretation, we are compelled to consider democracy as a form of moral idealism. This idealism, however, does not imply that idealism which is abruptly placed upon concrete reality from without. However, it does imply an idealism as accompanied with appropriate means for the realization of the ideal without threatening and impoverishing the present. Contemporary democracy is being questioned. Consequently, in order to give life to it, it is desirable to achieve the synthesis between pragmatism which regards consequences first, and idealism which gives foremost respect to the end.
