There has been a division of views as to whether moral education should be carried out throughout the whole life of the school, or should be undertaken in class hours especially designated for it. In order to determine our position toward this problem, we have to understand what moral education is. "Teaching" can be verified only from the amount of "learning" by the students. When an ethical norm is taught in moral education, it is expected that it should be learned by the pupils. To learn an ethical norm is to acquire the norm, and it does not mean to observe the norm just outwardly, but to behave from the conviction of the norm. So the aim of moral education is to influence the inner self of pupils and to help them behave spontaneously in accordance with ethical norms. Moral education is deeply related to the conviction or commitment of the pupils. Thus moral education cannot be taught satisfactorily in a specially designated class hour. We cannot anticipate successful moral education unless it permeates the entire school curriculum with a keen concern for life in the home, community and the whole world. Accordingly the determination of the success of moral education is a very difficult problem. However, since we have indicated what the problem is, it is theoretically possible to arrive at a solution. I believe this is one of the most important tasks assighed to the philosophy of education.
