3406 Environmental Assessment of Railway Track Maintenance System Using the Matrix-based Life Cycle Assessment Method

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is one of the effective tools for environmental assessment of a product or service. Recent years, accompanying with the concern about environmental problems, LCA studies about the railway system have been carried out. In this paper, the new research results about the environmental assessment of railway track maintenance system are introduced. Firstly, the matrix-based LCA method is simply introduced. After that, by establishing the matrix model of track maintenance system, the environmental loads associated with one year's track maintenance are calculated. Furthermore, by carrying out sensitivity analysis, the essential items in the maintenance system, which have huge influences on the final cumulative environmental loads, are specified and discussed. Moreover, the environmental effects of the reuse rate of used rail and recycling rate of waste rail to the reduction of CO_2 emission are studied. Environmental influence of the construction of maintenance-free track is studied and discussed as well.
