Magnetic Property of a Single Crystal UCu_2Ge_2(Condensed matter: electronic structure and electrical, magnetic, and optical properties)

We have succeeded in growing a single crystal of UCu_2Ge_2 with the tetragonal structure by the Sn-flux method and measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat. This is the first single crystal growth of UCu_2Ge_2. The magnetic properties are highly anisotropic, reflecting the crystal structure. An easy-axis of magnetization is found to be the [001] direction (c-axis) with a saturation moment 1.75 μ_B/U, while the [100] direction (a-axis) is the hard-axis in magnetization, indicating an Ising-type ferromagnetism. The electronic specific heat coefficient is determined as 30mJ/(K^2-mol).
