Synthesis and Characterization of the New Ternary Uranium Compound U_<1.2>Fe_4Si_<9.7>

A single crystal of a new ternary silicide Uj.3Fe,jSig.7 has been synthesized by the Czochralskirnethod and characterized by X-ray difl'raction, raaagnetization, specific heat and electrical resis-tivity rneasurernents. It crystallizes in the hexagonal Er).3FejSig.3-type structure characterizedby a disordered two-dimensional layer of U-atoms. The lattice parameters are a = 3.956(l) Aand c :: 15.055(2) A. lVIagnetic stzsceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law down to 40 K withthe effective magnetic zmornent of 2.4 /7B/U. The electronic specific heat coefficient, y of 180rnJ /K'mol-U was obtained. A large residtnal resistivity due to the disordered structure of' theU-Si layer was observed.
