Long Range Antiferromagnetic Ordering Observed Below 20 mK in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor UPt_3

Ultralow-temperattrre rueutron scattering experiments have been carried out in order to sttndythe antiferromagnetic ordering in the heavy ferunion superconductor UPt3. We observed the(0.5 0 1) antiferrornagnetic peak below 5 K. We found a finite spin correlation length of about300 A above 50 rnK. The peak intensity increases linearly xvith decreasing temperature, andis suppressed below the supercondtrcting transition temperattrre of abotrt 0.56 K. The rnomentsize of 0.04 ps/XI was estinaated from the peak intensity. These behaviors are in full agreementwith results of previous studies. Strrprisingly, the antiferromagnetic peak exhibits considerablenarrowing below 50 mK, and a resoltrtion-limited peak is observed below 20 mK. This is directevidence that the antiferrouaaagnetic long-range ordering is realized in UPt3 at ultralow temper-attrres.
