Coupling between Magnetic and Superconducting Order Parameters and Evidence for the Spin Excitation Gap in the Superconducting State of a Heavy Fermion Superconductor UPd_2Al_3

Neutron scattering experiments have been carried ottt in order to study the interplay be-tween rnagnetiszn and superconductivity in a heavy ferrnion strperconductor, UPd3Al3. We haveobserved 1% suppression of the (O O 0.5) naagnetic peak intensity below the superconductingtransition ternperatttre T.. This is direct evidence for the coupling of the magnetic order pa-rarneter with the superconducting one. Furtherrmore, we have olcserved a spin excitation gapassociated with superconductivity. The gap energy AE. increases continuously from AE. : 0 to0.4 meV with decreasing ternperatttre froun T. to 0.4 K. This gap energy corresponds to 2knT.,which is smaller than the superconducting gap expected from the BCS theory (3.5/cgT.). Theseresults are indicative of the strong interplay between magnetism and stnpercondtrctivity.
