Estimation of the 1-Octanol/Water Partiton Coefficient.Relationship of Positions of Substituents on a Benzene Ring

Abstract The ortho effect on log P (partition coefficient in 1-octanol/water) of bisubstituted benzenes is analyzed with data on 71 pairs of bisubstituted benzenes (each pair contains two isomers, ortho and para) by means of quantification analysis 1. The difference of log P values between ortho and para isomers is proved to be represented as a function of four kinds of interaction factors, intramolecular hydrogen bonding, the polar/polar interaction, the polar/halogen interaction, and the steric effect. The results were tested for estimating the ortho effect on log P of other pairs of bisubstituted benzenes.
