ECS:Generic searching system for generic names of the Existing Chemical Substances in Japan using plural number of generic chemical structures

Abstract A prototype chemical substance retrieval system has been developed to search specific and generic names of Existing Chemical Substances (Japanese legislation) for a specific substance or a family of substances (1) of which the query compound is a member, or (2) which are similar to the query substances. One of its remarkable features of the ECS system is capability of searching of generic names for one or more generic names for a set of currently four generic strutural formulas as a query. In the system a specific structural formula is treated as one special type of generic structural formulas. Each type of generic structures of a query is compared with its same type of structural formulas corresponding to each name. The four types of representations defined from different viewpoints of generality were designed to permit a generic search corresponding to a specific or generic compound the searcher inputs. The method using such plural structural formulas has been invented to treat generic names of Existing Chemical Substances, but it might be a prominent way of searching generic names for a generic name without any special skil1s or jargon. Markush index has been invented as a tool to indicate a pattern of similarity between substances.
