Temperature Elevation in Rabbit Eye Irradiated by 2.45-GHz Exposure Systems

This study calculated the temperature elevation in the rabbit eye caused by 2.45-GHz near-field exposure systems. First, we calculated the specific absorption rate distributions in the eye for different antennas, and then compared with those observed in previous studies. Next, we re-examined the temperature elevation in the rabbit eye due to a horizontally-polarized dipole antenna with a C-shaped director, which was used in the Guy's study (1975). For our computational results, we found that the decisive factor of the SAR distribution in the rabbit eye was the polarization of the EM wave. We quantified the eye average SAR as 67 W/kg for an input power density of 150 mW/cm^2, which was specified in the Guy's work as the threshold for microwave-induced cataract. Using our thermal computation model, the effect of administration of anesthesia on the temperature elevation was also presented in the above case. Additionally, good correlation between maximum temperature increase in the lens and eye average SAR was observed, as is the same with the human eye.
