This paper describes an autonomous foreign language-learning scheme in operation at one university in the United Kingdom. The introduction reviews the concept and practice of autonomous language learning. Then the details of the tandem scheme are presented: students work together independently of the teacher to practice conversation. Each "tandem" student has a different native language, and each student is learning the other's native language. This tandem language learning can also be done in written mode at a distance, by e-mail.
