This paper examines the current state of second-language reading pedagogy, with particular reference to the strategies for improving reading comprehension. The place of reading in the era of the primacy of audio-visual electronic media is examined. Turning to the mechanics of second-language reading itself, the factors which restrict the reader's understanding of texts are examined. Since vocabulary emerges as the major factor in reading difficulty, the possible approaches to solving this problem are discussed. After analyzing the concept of guessing from context, the various applications of dictionaries, both monolingual and bilingual, are presented. A practical project to examine the use of glosses in which bilingual and monolingual word lists were compared is described, and as a result some conclusions for advancing reading pedagogy are suggested.
