This paper charts the current debate over the language teaching curriculum, and suggests some promising pointers for the future. After elucidating some questions of definition of "syllabus" and "curriculum", three main foundations of different approaches to curriculum design are analyzed : the language, the learner and the method. Syllabuses based on the language are both traditional, such as the "grammar translation method", and more recent such as those aiming at "communicative competence". Turning to syllabuses focusing on the learner, approaches such as the "negotiated syllabus" are presented. Finally, there is a discussion of syllabus types which are based on a method. Some conclusions regarding relevant curriculum concepts for the contemporary university are suggested.
