The last few years has seen a vast diversification in teaching situations. Various factors have contributed to this trend. Both the move towards learner independence (Dickinson, 1987) and the rapid changes in educational technology (Mason and Kaye (Eds.) 1989), have led to new relationships between the teacher and the learner. Among these, the geographical separation of teacher and learner has given rise to the terms "distance leaning" (DL) or "open education". This mode of learning has been applied in many countries for teaching a wide variety of subjects to students with a range of educational and social backgrounds (see Daniel et al (Eds.) 1982). It has also been applied to EFL (Richards and Rowe, 1994) and to teacher education. In this article we consider courses in Linguistics for practicing native-speaker teachers of English as a foreign language living abroad, concentrating on students living in Japan. Several different qualifications are available, with titles such as Diploma in Linguistics (TESOL) or Master of Arts in Linguistics (TESOL). In particular we will deal with Master of Arts courses in Linguistics offered by British universities. For readers who require an introduction to this type of course, some basic data covering topics such as course content, duration, teaching method, fees and entry qualifications is available elsewhere (Dunkley, 1997).
