This paper examines strategies for evaluating the reading ablitiy of large groups of students of university level, and suggests some principles for test design. After a discussion of the place of reading in the contemporary language teaching situation, a brief description of the reading process is presented. The question of testing methods is approached by examining native language tests of reading in English, and contrasts are pointed out between these and tests of English for foreign students. Treating the issue of fairness and reliability of reading tests, the problem of question style is approached. Finally a project to compare the effect of using first and second language questions in a reading comprehension test is described and conclusions are presented.
