Of all the various types (or "decision purposes" (Brown 1996, 9)) of tests-achievement, proficiency, diagnostic and placement-it is in placement testing that self-evaluation has been most widely and successfully applied. This paper first looks at the nature of placement testing, and presents some ideas about self-assessment. Then, using data from a study, we give some conclusions about the practicality of self-assessment, and finally we suggest some future uses of self-assessment procedures.
