In recent years the achievement of "communicative competence" has emerged as the goal of the teaching of English as a second language. However, the testing of this competence is somewhat complex. This paper explains how a good test should be constructed. First the nature of comunicative competence is defined. Then the criteria which underly a good test are presented : validity, reliability and practicality. Finally two examples of tests are given and conclusions are drawn.
