1. The gonadal anlage was found in the 12-day-old fetuses as the genital ridge on the ventral side of the mesonephros. 2. Gonads recognizable as testes were found in the 14-day-old fetuses. 3. The seminiferous tubules are not to be thought as bud-like out-growth and tubular invagination of the peritoneum. They are formed as cell masses encircled by the cells which appear within the the uniform gonad blastema and have darkly stained, slender nucleus and long tapering cytoplsmic processes. These cells are interpreted in terms of either transfigurations of some cells within the blastema itself or derivatives invading from the tunica albuginea. 4. The initial step of the formation of the rete testis was seen in the 16- to 17- day-old fetuses as a blastemal tissue between the mesonephric ductuli and the head of the testis. This blastema was seen to involve thickening of the coelomic epithelium and was continous with the mesonephric ductuli. The blastema expanded also into the testis and, at the contact of the seminiferous tubules with the blastema, tubules binded together into one tubule without defined membrane. 5. In the 14-day-old fetuses, in the interstitial tissue frequent groups of round cells having abundant eosinophilic granules were seen. These cells were probably derived from the connective tissue elements whether the elements originated from the coelomic epithelium or whether from the tunica albuginea. 6. In one of the 19-day-old fetuses observed, most of the germ cells in the seminiferous tubules were under degeneration, and in the remaining fetuses a few germ cells degenerated.
