Three hundred mg carboplatin was administered intraperitoneally to a 55-year-old woman with ascites due to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). Not only her ascites but also her enlarged intraperitoneal lymph nodes were markedly diminished. Her quality of life improved, because the weekly abdominal paracentesis and drainage became unnecessary. The efficacy continued for more than six weeks until the patient died of infiltration of ATLL into the central nervous system. Carboplatin is an active agent for ATLL, and usually administered systemically. The present report indicates that intraperitoneal carboplatin was a safe and effective treatment for malignant ascites from ATLL.
